EMERGING ARTIST
A cycle of 16 woodcuts made from 2019-21 exploring themes of performed identity, the act of making, and the relationship between a picture and its viewer.
This series established many aspects of my practice that seem to have endured, including the woodcut process, the earthy colour palette and the incorporation of pictures within pictures.
I was intrigued by the idea that one’s identity emerges from the things they do and make, rather than the other way round. I think Bob Dylan may have been paraphrasing George Bernard Shaw when he said: “Life isn’t about finding yourself, or finding anything. Life is about creating yourself. And creating things.”
