MAN WRESTLING AN ANGEL
A woodcut in nine panels made in response to Jacob Epstein’s alabaster carving Jacob and the Angel (1940-41).
The biblical story of Jacob wrestling the angel is one of physical struggle and perseverance, which is reflected in the epic Epstein carving, so it felt only right that my woodcut should be pretty big. I think of it as a response to an artwork rather than a biblical illustration: a Jacob making a piece about a Jacob making a piece about a Jacob.
