THE BOXER

A series of woodcuts made in response to Pierre Bonnard’s 1931 self portrait Le Boxeur: portrait de l’artiste, in which the artist depicts his reflection holding a boxing stance.

My series takes the Bonnard painting’s mix of vulnerability and resilience as a starting point for my own reflection on masculinity. Art historical and pop cultural fighters named Jake are referenced throughout, including the depictions of the Old Testament’s Jacob, American professional wrestler Jake ‘The Snake’ Roberts and boxer Jake La Motta.
